Custom Treehouse Build in Northwest Austin, TX

A family in Northwest Austin had a backyard full of mature live oaks and an idea. Build a treehouse where their kids can make memories for years to come.

Not a prefab platform bolted to a single trunk, but a structure with walls, windows, and a roof. One that fits the trees in the backyard.

Built Around the Trees

The biggest decision on a project like this is where to place it. Live oaks grow wide and low, and the trunks on this property cluster together, creating a natural pocket about eight feet off the ground. We built the treehouse directly into that pocket, using the trunks as part of the structure.

The floor platform rests on structural supports that work with the tree trunks rather than cutting into them. That matters for the trees’ health and long-term stability. Live oaks shift and grow slowly, and a rigid connection can crack framing or damage bark over time.

The Build Details

The structure itself is a fully enclosed room with two black-framed windows on the front wall. Plywood siding painted in a warm tan keeps things clean. The lean-to roof pitches rain away from the ladder and porch area.

A small front porch with wooden balusters gives kids a place to hang out before heading inside. The ladder has wide, spaced treads for smaller feet and is angled for an easy climb.

Everything that touches the ground or is exposed to the weather is pressure-treated lumber. The hardware is galvanized. In Central Texas, where we experience stretches of 100-degree days followed by heavy rain, materials that can handle both extremes are a must.

Why Custom Beats a Kit

Treehouse kits exist, and some of them look fine in the box. The problem is that they’re designed for a single straight trunk on flat ground. Most Austin backyards don’t look like that. Between live oaks with sprawling root systems, rocky limestone soil, and slopes that change grade every few feet, a kit rarely fits without major modifications.

A custom build lets us work with the yard as it is. We can adjust the platform’s height and angle and build it to a size that fits the space. The treehouse on this property wouldn’t have worked as anything other than a custom job.

FAQs

How long does a custom treehouse take to build? Most treehouses take one to two weeks, depending on size, height, and how many trees are involved, and weather. A single-tree platform is faster. A multi-tree structure like this one, with enclosed walls and a roof, takes closer to two weeks.

Do treehouses damage the trees? Not if they’re built correctly. We avoid drilling into the trunk wherever possible and use supports that allow for natural tree movement. Rigid bolted connections can girdle bark and restrict growth over time, so the attachment method matters more than most people realize.

Do I need a permit for a treehouse in Austin? It depends on the size and height. Structures under 120 square feet and under a certain height often don’t require a permit in Travis County, but setback rules and HOA restrictions can still apply. We can help sort this out during the estimate, so there aren’t any surprises after the build starts.
